The Institut d'Optique celebrates 100 years in 2017!

Published on

Created in 1917, the Institut d'Optique has contributed for more than a century to advancing the science and technology of light, gaining recognition at the global level and an open to the international photonics community from the outset.

In a hundred years, the Institut d'Optique has undergone considerable development: from the one-year course followed by a handful of students in the first years, to a body of 150 student-engineers on 3 sites today (Bordeaux, Paris-Saclay , Saint Etienne). True to its mission, established by law in 1920, it supports the French photonics industry by harmoniously combining training of scientific engineers, doctoral training, innovation-entrepreneurship and research at the highest levels at three laboratories (Charles Fabry Laboratory, Laboratory Digital Photonics and Nanosciences (LP2N), Laboratory Hubert Curien).

The celebration of the centenary is a unique opportunity to tell this story filled with great scientific names: Charles Fabry, André Maréchal, Maurice Françon, Georges Nomarski, Alain Aspect and recent successes related to its Innovation-Entrepreneurs sector.

The Institut d'Optique is organizing a centennial week from October 10 to 15, 2017 with events at all of its sites, in conjunction with Science Week.
